Thursday Week 5

Good morning everyone! Hope you managed to get out and enjoy the sunshine and heat yesterday.

Here are today’s activities:

IPC – Geography Lesson 6

Today we are going to look at natural disasters and how they affect tourism. Have you experienced any extreme weather whilst on holiday (either in the UK or abroad)?

When I went home at Christmas time, Australia was in the middle of the horrible bushfires. There were no fires close to my home luckily, but my Dad is the Captain of our local volunteer fire brigade and was constantly on the phone organising crews of people to travel to various fires around us and sometimes going himself. The air outside was thick with smoke, so we couldn’t stay outdoors for long. Tourists would not have been able to do many activities around Canberra and the few days I did go out, I couldn’t see much because of the thick blanket of smoke everywhere! Some flights in and out of Canberra were cancelled due to the smoke as well.

Your task is to find out more about a natural disaster, for example:

  • Montserrat Volcanic eruption (1995)
  • Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004)
  • Hurricane Katrina (2005)
  • Icelandic ash cloud – Eyjafjallajokull volcano (2010)
  • Haiti Earthquake (2010)
  • Japan Earthquake (2011)
  • UK Somerset Floods (2014)
  • Australian bushfires (2019-2020)

Find out the following about your chosen natural disaster:

  • Why the natural disaster occurred
  • What geographical processes were involved
  • Where in the world the disaster occurred
  • Who was affected by the event
  • What happened as a result of the disaster
  • How tourism was affected by the event

You can present your work any way you like (such as a poster or PowerPoint). Ensure you include maps and photographs to explain the natural disaster.

PSHE –

Today we’re going to be looking at the words ‘power’ and ‘control’. Power is possession of control, authority, or influence over others. Control is the power to influence or direct people’s behaviour or the course of events. Sometimes people try to gain power or control (without authority) over an individual or group of people for the wrong reasons.

What are the possible reasons why someone might try to have power or control over others?

Somebody trying to gain power or control over someone else might not be doing it on purpose and might not realise they are doing it. In other cases, it may be planned and deliberate. The important thing is standing up for yourself and others, and that begins with making the person aware of what they are doing and how it is making you feel.

Read through the following scenarios. Explain who is trying to gain power and control and how they are doing this. Then, suggest ways the central character (s) could stand up for themselves or deal with the situation.

Wednesday Week 5

Good morning everyone!

Today’s activities are:

English – (grammar)

IPC – Geography Lesson 5

Let’s think about the word ecotourism. Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people. It is an important issue within the tourism industry in today’s world.

Your task is to research the effect of tourism on a specific area of the world. Consider the positives and negatives of tourism in this area and what is being done to minimise the damage. Would you travel to this place after researching the effect tourism has on it?

Suggested areas:

  • Great Barrier Reef, Australia
  • Antarctic
  • Kenya
  • Costa Rica
  • Mallorca (see attached PDF document)
  • The Alps (see attached PDF document)

You may present your work any way you like – poster, report, PowerPoint etc.
